ST. ANDREW’S YOUTH MINISTRY

Parent Meeting – 11/14/2024

Meeting Summary

  1. Introduction & Leadership:

    • Jeremy Hochstein introduced himself, his wife Rachel, and their involvement with the youth ministry at Saint Andrews.
    • They shared their background and experience in faith formation and campus ministry.
  2. Youth Ministry Vision:

    • Youth ministry serves all students from 6th to 12th grade.
    • The focus is on “meeting the youth where they are”—acknowledging diverse faith backgrounds and building relationships to foster discipleship.
    • Youth leaders want to be authentic mentors rather than just teachers, emphasizing trust and community.
  3. Program Updates:

    • Due to changes in leadership and challenges like COVID, the program is being rebuilt.
    • A new schedule aims to shift youth activities to Sundays to align with Mass and create a sense of community.
    • High school youth group will include Sunday evening Mass, dinner, and engaging faith sessions.
    • Confirmation classes are open to all youth, but participation is voluntary and should come from the individual’s desire.
  4. Parental Involvement:

    • Parents are encouraged to support their children by participating in a monthly class.
    • These classes aim to build parents’ understanding of faith, foster fellowship, and fulfill service hour requirements.
    • Classes are offered in both English and Spanish, usually held after Sunday Mass.
  5. Communication & Support:

    • Communication will mainly happen through Flock Note, and parents are encouraged to ensure they are signed up.
    • Jeremy emphasized the importance of a check-in/check-out process for youth for safety reasons, especially concerning who picks up children.
    • Additional support is needed for organizing meals, transportation, and donations for high school activities.
  6. Confirmation Changes:

    • Confirmation schedules will be set by the diocese, and dates are yet to be determined.
    • Confirmation preparation includes understanding the sacrament, attending Mass, and active participation in youth group.
    • The process is meant to be personal and should not be forced, as it would invalidate the sacrament.
  7. Key Dates:

    • High school youth group resumes December 1st.
    • Middle school youth group resumes December 2nd.
    • First parent class: December 15th.
    • Fundraiser (Cookie Sale): December 7-8.

The meeting emphasized building community, engaging parents in their children’s faith formation, and creating a supportive environment for the youth to grow in their faith.
